What EGL needs going forward (Suggestions I have been given)

    Millo @TMillo

I've been speaking to a lot of people since EGL and as I'm in a few of the American communities skype chats I've got a lot of feedback stream wise as well.

    • Gaps in the stream
People have always not liked the gaps in the stream between games and it's something that is so hard to control with teams walking about and setting up. I know Sleh tried like a boss to get it all working. Suggestions I've been given is that people would love to see coverage of the event itself during the stream (Interviews, Chatting, The event walkthroughs) which could be easily implemented with a guy with a camera and Sony Vegas.
    • 'Pro Lounge'
When speaking to a lot of teams at the event the ones who seemed to be the most wound up were the best teams at not playing for so long and only warming up on Dome. Tommey and one of the Obey guys brought up the idea of a 'Pro Lounge' which MLG have available to the top 8 seeded teams with 8 xboxes so that they could play.. and it'd give other teams something to aim for for the next event. You could also use it quite well for streaming showmatches or even fun games like apeX.Pro vs NA on DropZone or something.
    • Having a third stream
This stream is not aimed at being professional like the other two.. more of a community stream on something like the DecertoHD channel with members of the community commentating on show matches or giving alternate commentary to the feature matches. (JoeB)
    • 3 day events
As I know nothing of what people go through organising this I don't know the possibilities of this but a lot of people have said it would be nice (with the community growing so much) to have a 2.5/3 day event so that it isn't as mad as this one. Maybe the 1st WB & LB round on the friday before the Sat/Sunday of proper gaming.

Obviously it'd be nice if all could be implemented but so many different factors are there which mean it may not be possible. What do you guys think? What could EGL do to improve at future events?

Once you've done the Bracket and set up. Sort out a schedule for each station. So every1 can see which game is on next. Would also have to put the bracket around more so its alot more accessible. With both of those in place people wouldnt have to wait for refs to call people over all the time. Players can take sort it themselves. Ask for a ref if they want 1. Then start. Would make games go alot faster. EGL do not use there time wisely at all.

I think a FFA should be re-introduced if a 3 day event were to be introduced, gives people a feel for LAN, playing under pressure / banter related, this should be on the Friday. Even if it where not to count toward anything, it could just be a test for EGL (connection and hardware wise) and also some fun / experience for everyone to meet and play kind of thing.

There shouldn't be an FFA if it's at expense of a smooth running tournament, MLG didn't run an FFA until nationals and even then it was held Friday lunchtime and didn't effect the usual schedule.

I think the 3 day event is the best suggestion that's come out of the entire event, if merged with a new bracket system and pool play it could allow for the first set of games to be played on the friday as Millo said.

More of a casual 'FFA / Warm Up' type thing, so everyone can play and meet each other.

It's always been a part of my plan to be able to integrate general event coverage into the stream, but sadly I just don't have the equipment for it to work fully.

This should be rectified for the next event, I'll be getting a second capture card which will allow me to throw another HDMI input into the mix, so we can have a proper full HD Camera without 5 second input lag of the one I used at Blackpool for interviews.

If the budget allows I'll also get a second rendering PC which we can render event footage on and have it ready for the stream within minutes.

if there isnt enough xboxs for the pro lounge thing im sure we could get 8 xboxs and monitors brought down of 8 people, i wouldnt mind bringing one down, if we are doing open bracket system the pros wont be playing for hours so this is needed, it would also cut the warm up time on mainstage down, so youre streams would run better

Gaps in stream we've got a plan for. We're going to have a second stream that we cut to during down to of the main stage. Problem solved there.

A pro lounge is something we're looking at, as well as pro placements, although I doubt we'll be introducing an MLG copy bracket.

A 3 day event is easier said than done. I can't really discuss the feasibility of this.

Having a stupid stream is a bad idea. To a lot of you guys this is just a bit of fun, that's why you wanna grab the mic and talk rubbish, that's why you want to have a stream with "banter" on it rather than proper commentary. The reality is, this represents our brand badly and we can't really produce content like that at this point.

There are a lot of ways we could improve. We've got loads of ideas going forward and always do.

triple elim bracket like reflex would be better or just placement games this would probably only work in a 3 day event with the amount of teams attending but i think this would draw even more teams in as they would play more games and would get a definative placement rather than 20 people sitting in one position

Thought this event was ran well, you and razor seemed to have all aspects under control, even with coneection issues, keep it up you have improved every lan, the next should be even better.

I agree to be honest. If you strip away the disasters, of which there were many completely out of our control, the staff that did pitch in actually ran the tournament very efficiently. We finished about 3 hours behind schedule. Considering the fact that the bulk of the refs basically didn't want to know, we had a lot of down time, we had two less stations than we'd aimed for, we were losing a lot of hardware (possibly due to dirty power). If we strip away those problems it's likely that we'd have finished several hours in advance. From an admin point of view I was extremely pleased with how it went, and great credit needs to go to the relevant parties. I'm often disappointed with the performance of the refs but this event was particularly poor on their part.

There were a few that did work hard, but they were about 1/3 of the total list we signed up to ref. The list will be considered much harder next time around. We live and learn.

It's hard enough for them to run a double elim with the amount of teams which are now showing up to events.

With the 'Pro Lounge' thing, at MLG they have a corner squared off with about 2 4v4 stations in for Call Of Duty and the same with Halo and so on. It has a sofa/place to chill, a fridge with drinks and so on. It gives people something to aim for and EGL also need to implement this EGL Pro status as that would make the competition so much more.

Also, what needs to happen is the playing area should have a barrier type of thing, like you see when queuing at a bank or something, It stops people getting extremely close behind you yet they can still spectate, It makes playing at LAN a lot better also.

Mellow said a 3 day event isn't feasible.

From my POV it seems like we're almost trying to make a carbon copy of the MLG system, not in brackets before any idiot quotes me on this, but the whole branding. When speaking to str8 days after the event it was clear they liked the fact that LAN as sad as it sounds is more of a little holiday for us. We dont take it nearly as seriously as they do over there and I think this is a good thing. Now we dont have to stray too far away from the serious side of things but I think this extra stream is a good idea, it'll give us a little originality and whilst you might first see it as 'stupid' if it was done well it would be far from stupid.

    Razor #Believe

Half of this has already been said, but obviosuly we are trying to improve events. If people think about it this is our 5th event. We are getting there, through talking to come of the Americans on Halo and COD they thought we were at the same stage MLG were in 07/08. So we are getting there.

Things like the 'pro' section need the venue to be huge, otherwise we can't justify taking a space in the venue we need for stations for the tournament.

also going forward, we need more staff. This is not be being on my high horse but me Martin and Mellow when he can run COD. With the help of a couple of refs and people that pitch in now and again. But we just don't have time to be putting on the perfect little touches and making the event better. As we are too concerned with actually getting the thing done.
